FDCN Young Designer Awards

This year sees the launch of the fourth Young Designer Awards organised by Fashion Designers’ and Craft makers Network FDCN. These awards were founded by knitwear designer Joanna Marcella to raise the profile of young cutting edge multicultural designers and takes place in late autumn.

Two of last years winners of FDCN Young Designer Awards, Christiana Gbadebo and Kelly Nicholls were given a great opportunity as a result of their dedication and show of creativity in fashion. Christiana was be given the rare opportunity to be featured at the London Fashion Forums’ (LFF) Boutique situated at Kingly Court, Carnaby Street London in the heart of the West End. She was featured alongside other up and coming designers and Kelly will be showcasing at the Caribbean Fashion Week in Jamaica.

For the first time since the launch these awards three years ago Joanna Marcella had the opportunity of introducing a new award category. The Tyler Media Award which was sponsored and named after the Tyler Media group from the USA, they are one of the main organizers of Caribbean Fashion Week. The Tyler Media Award encouraged our young designers to compete for a prestigious place in the world of fashion, as collections are shown on professional models to an audience of international Buyers, Fashion Editors, Press and Celebrities.

The Tyler Media Award was designed to honour a student aged 9 – 20 who excelled in fashion and visual arts and thus awarded for their academic accomplishments. Christie Dinham (of Tyler Media) chose to focus on Fashion last year. Kelly Nicholls was picked out of 25 young designers for this coveted award. The award presents a rare opportunity for Kelly to scale to new heights within the fashion industry, and will also give her an international platform to present her collection, on a global level in June 2005.

This year (FDCN) is partnering with one of Britain’s leading charities Barnardo’s to launch a Young designer Awards these awards are open to young people from different geographical and ethnic backgrounds to help breakdown prejudice and allow them to express their own creativity and imagination. The awards are open to young people between 9-25 years, who can design and produce a flamboyant, cutting edge garment which will be showcased in the gala event.

Joanna says “this year we want as many as 25 entrants to participate and be in for a chance to win such a great prize; our theme this year will be ‘roots and heritage’ which will focus on cultural ‘diversity’. Designers will get their inspiration from their own lives and cultural backgrounds”.

The team at FDCN will be working with the six winners from last year, to showcase their new collections around the UK over the next 12 months, Their first showcase was at the Afro Hair and Beauty Show on 29th and 30th May at AlexanderPalace.
