Yorkshire man Christopher Bailey, creative director of British company Burberry hardly an easy climb to fame. coco chanel"I am neither in the past nor avant-garde. My style follows life" Gabriella Coco Chanel.

The start of Coco Chanel in 1913 by Gabriella ‘Coco' Chanel is one of the most iconic and well known designer and household name of the 20th century. Famous for the introduction of the little black dress and quilted handbags, the label has become something of lust. The Chanel No'5 perfume which was invented in 1921 is still a number one seller and a fashion ‘classic', alongside the tweed women's suits from the 50's. The death of Chanel in 1971 left behind a strict list of house codes including that of the usage of pearls, tweed, evening bags and the love of sport. With Karl Lagerfeld's take over Chanel now owns stores across the world, with a multi-floored store in Tokyo which includes a restaurant, Beige Tokyo and a glassy façade with sparkly lights to represent its famous tweed.

"I'm inspired by sunsets, sunrises, being with horses and love" Phoebe Philo.

With Maria Callas and Grace Kelly as original fans of Chloe's first collection of six dresses in 1952 Chloe was born to be as world renowned as it is today. Karl Lagerfeld was appointed house designer in 1966, which was followed by the dramatic increase of popularity throughout the late 60's and 70's. Heiress Christina Onassis even bought 36 blouses in one visit. The resignation of Karl Lagerfeld in the 1983 meant a slump within Chloe. Yet in 1997 when Stella McCartney joined the Chloe team, Chloes images dramatically developed in to a rock'n'roll chic image thanks to McCartneys famous friends such as Kate Moss and Cameron Diaz being keen fans. Phoebe Phil finally took over in 2001 after work in close conjunction with McCartney over her 4 year period.

Dolce & Gabbana

"Fashion's answer to Viagra" Fashion Now 2, Taschen

Dolce & Gabbana 2 picsThe combination of theatrical ideas and tailoring perfection allows Dolce & Gabbana to produce garments which are perfect for the idealistic celebrities of today. With Domenico Dolce's father being a tailor himself and teaching him to construct a jacket by the age of seven he was several steps ahead of most others! Yet the meeting of Stefano Gabbana in Dolces hometown really confirmed their partnership. Their opposite ideas in fashion are the key ingredients to making them so popular and individual. Started in 1985 there inspiration still spurs from Hollywood films, music and football stars.

"I am always happy if people give my designs the time of day"

Presented with the British Fashion Award of 2004 for Best New Designer, Giles Deacons first approach to London's Central St Martins in 1992 he labeled as a pure novelty factor is far from what his successful career now stands at. His first collection in 2004 titled ‘Disco Jacobean fairytale' was sophisticated womenswear with a hint of 40's style items. Prints used by Deacon are often inspired by Art Nouveau demonstrating his illustrational side, but also has done a collection for Agent Provocateur.

armarni, josh harnet"He's an institution, an icon and a multinational, billion-dollar brand" Fashion now 2

Passing his 50th year as a successful designer, Giorgio Armani is a well renowned name and creator. First studying medicine and completing his national duties he only began to really shine when in 1975 he set up the Giorgio Armani label. Unstructured jackets and simple colours suggested by Armani rebelled against the structured look of the 70's and 80's yet worked incredibly well for Armani himself.  He has had the cover of Time magazine in 1982, as well as being presented with awards including Honorary Doctorate from the RCA in 1991. His fashion line has now even developed into other areas of fashion, such as bed linen and even chocolate!

Although the 80's were seen to be a quite period of Cavalli's career the 90's saw a comeback worth waiting for. With guidance from his second wife his new collection portrayed sex appeal, extravagant themes and ideas from across the globe. In 2003 it was reported that Cavalli had a turnover of over €289million and collections in over 30 countries.

Donatella Versace is un-doubtably one of the most glamorous and well known women of today's fashion world. Her sparkling and glitzy image is one which the Versace clothing line is clearly inspired by. Gianni Versace set up Versace in 1978 and called on the help of Donatella Versace in the early 80's and throughout the 90's. Young Versace came to light in 1993, shortly before Donatella fully took over the family business due to her brother's death in 1996. Donatella quickly brought Versace into the 21sty century, and with the help of people such as Elizabeth Hurley and Madonna fronting Versace campaigns, the company is continuously rising in success. The very first six star Versace hotel was later opened on the Gold Coat of Australia in 2000.
