Coco Chanel, the movie is a biopic of the influential and iconic French designer starring Shirley MacLaine and Barbara Bobulova

Coco Chanel

A new film made by Coco Chanel entitled, "Coco Chanel" is currently airing on the US network Lifetime.  The two part film starring six time Oscar nominee and Academy Award winner, Shirley MacLaine as Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel has received less than gratifying press in the US. Critics aired their dismay due to the films lack of structure, portraying fiction as fact and poor acting.

The two parts of yet another high end fashion designers attempt at "content marketing" are defined by MacLaine playing the "older" Chanel and Barbara Bobulova's role of her "younger" soubriquet. American press found this as another unfortunate avenue to attack the fashion giant in that the two actresses apparently bare "no resemblance to one another than they both look like a well cut suit". The film is scheduled to premiere on September 13th at 8pm ET.

The film embarks upon Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel's professional and personal predicaments.  Imminently introducing the 1954 Chanel, (MacLaine) and her lovers, played by Oliver Sitruk and Sagamore Stevenin, "who are all as wooden as a dressmaker's dummies," writes New York Times TV critic.

This "rags to riches" tale of woe and strife may not have the yanks on board however I'm sure the Brits will have opposing views.  We really are suckers for stories entailing an uphill struggle to find the inevitable beacon of hope and success that Chanel has portrayed via the life of the only person in her field to be named in Times Magazine's 100 most influential women.

Barbara Bobulova

The film recounts from Coco's humble childhood in a French orphanage, through her dressmaker apprenticeship, to her passionate and tragic love life having met her match with English entrepreneur and non conformist. After a 15 year absence, Chanel reopened her prestigious Haute Couture House with a comeback collection of which herself and business partner, Marc Bouchier, (McDowell) were shocked that critics and customers reject it.

As time passed after the Second World War, the Chanel Empire hits trouble and with the determination of this captivating woman, manages to turn everything around. After the dismissal of her failed comeback collection, within three seasons a new collection was born. The reinvention of the Chanel suit became a status symbol for a new era enforcing the timeless style of this groundbreaking label.

Despite Gabrielle's arduous life filled with abandonment and doomed relationships, the pursuit of her pioneering success landed her not only an eternal mark within the fashion industry but a series of films to celebrate her honor. We salute her sheer grit and determination on her quest to stardom and achieving so much in her life regardless of every encountered hindrance.
