Introducing Project Gateway...![]() Project Gateway is a Church-based, non-profit making organisation, serving the city of Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We aim to equip and empower local people through our enterprise, education and care activities. The project was formally established in 1992 when the Old Prison in Pietermaritzburg became available as a base. The mission statement reflects the vision of the project:"To change people's lives by helping them physically, emotionally and spiritually. We aim to uplift people and their communities through job and life skills, reaching all people without prejudice, showing the compassion of Jesus Christ, honouring our Creator." Business Development - Our aim is to raise up, in a holstic manner, well-equipped entrepreneurs running sustainable businesses. The Business Development Programme includes training in business skills, marketing support and mentorship for new businesses. Community Care Project - Seeing every individual as precious to God, and having physical, emotional and spiritual needs, the Community Care Project seeks to provide a church based network of training and care in AIDS related needs in selected communities. The CCP exists to see to the establishment of a holistic and practical base for the fight against the spread of HIV & AIDS and to become a vehicle for reducing the effects of the disease through family based interventions. Duduza - Caring for orphaned and vulnerable children infected and affected by HIV & AIDS by building the capacity of caregivers and communities to provide emotional, spiritual and physical support. Our desire is to see children that mature into emotionally and psycologically stable adults. Esther House - To provide shelter for women and their children in distressful or vulnerable situations, within the context of Christian discipleship, for an initial period of up to three months and a potential further period of up to two years, depending on the individual needs of the women, until alternative, independent housing is available. Counselling is facilitated and training in basic skills such as cooking and sewing is offered. Gateway Christian School - We aim to provide good quality education, at affordable fees, in a Christian setting. The school is an independent primary school registered with the Department of Education. We are committed to quality education for - the majority of our learners come from disadvantaged backgrounds and many depend on sponsorship to cover their fees. Gateway School of Fashion - Providing orphaned and vulnerable youth infected and affected by HIV & AIDS who show create and artistic flair with the opportunity to study further in creative design. This project is carried out in conjunction with Karen Millen, University College for the Creative Arts and HopeHIV. Sunset Overnight Shelter - Reaching out with Christ's hands and Christ's heart by providing a safe secure place for the homeless to be fed and sheltered at night. For a token contribution homeless men and women are given a secure place to sleep and a simple meal on a nightly basis. Approximately 40 people can be accomodated per night. Pregnancy Crisis Centre - To protect, nurture, guide and equipe women facing a pregnancy crisis situation to a place of spiritual, emotional, and physical wholeness in the light of the best God has for them and their unborn children. PCC offers pregnancy testing at a nominal fee, free councelling, a schools programme that promotes abstinence and accommodation for up to 8 women in their last trimester of pregnancy. Rural Home Industries - Our mission is two-fold: 1) to show and teach the love of Jesus as we train disadvantaged women to make or market garments and household goods, which they can be proud to use or sell; 2) to distribute as rapidly as possible items donated to Project Gateway by the public.
