Profile: Kim Day

Ms Kim Day is the new director of Linea Academy, a tertiary institution in Durban, South Africa, that offers a four year honours degree in fashion design. Ms Day has a Masters Degree in Education, specializing in Gender Studies, and brings her experience in the education field to her role as director of Linea.

Ms Day is a firm believer in the possibilities that can be realized through a quality education and maintains that in Linea she has found her element, an environment that combines creativity with intellectual enquiry.

Ms Day argues that fashion is much more than just clothes and as such, fashion is the perfect vehicle through which to study the collective consciousness of a society at any given time. A part of the education students receive at Linea is an ability to read the social milieu, in order that, as fashion designers, the students are encouraged to produce cutting edge designs that speak to us of the present as well as introduce us to the future. Ms Day is fascinated by people and finds the fashion system endlessly intriguing and illuminating, particularly when the fashion system is studied within its social context.

When Ms Day is not teaching theory classes at Linea Academy she enjoys parenting her three and a half year old daughter, reading, writing as a means of expressing her narrative self and her new found interest in dabbling with collage on canvas as a means of exploring aspects of identity.
