Before you start selling goods you will need to consider how to secure them, whether you are selling for a store or distributing from a warehouse. Here is a basic guide to highlight security issues that you should consider when designing and fitting your premises.
Theft prevention
The majority of thieves are opportunistic shoplifters. To eliminate these opportunities you should consider the layout of your store by: + Making counters wide and raise the floor behind. + Concerning valuable goods, they can be placed in cabinets, display copies instead of originals, attach security tags. + Use mirrors to reveal hidden areas. + Train staff to recognise suspicious behavior, thieves may operate in groups, some providing a distraction whilst others steal. + Install CCTV - even a sign highlighting your CCTV can deter possible shoplifters. + Seek advice from your local police station about locating tills. + Install security gates and tagging items.
Security for more ardent thieves or when staff have left for the night: + Remove high-value portable items from display windows at night. + Lock/attach computers to desks. + Additional strengthened doors and windows. + Install alarm systems and outside CCTV. + Cover drainpipes in anti-climb paint. + Fit bars or shutters on windows and doors. + Ensure window displays do not block views. + Remove graffiti and make the building looked cared for. + Light up entrances.
Your own employees could even be stealing, not only your products but general supplies and equipment. Some measures to deter this include: + Have restricted access to the warehouse, stockroom and stationery cupboards. + Ensure deliveries are checked against delivery notes. + Keep delivery/loading bays secure.
