2007: A Year in Fashion By Becky Lyon Print E-mail
As the end of the year draws near, so does another 365 days of fabulous fashion fads, trends and glamorous happenings…

Image
…2007 was the year of the celebrity collaboration seeing H&M join forces with pop super-powers Madonna and Kylie as well as the leopard print king himself, Roberto Cavalli. New Look got hip with Lily Allen and Giles whilst TopShop realised the collaboration of all collaborations….Kate Moss.

...‘Green’ became the new ‘black’ as the fashion industry finally realised it needed to clean up its act. Sustainable fashion became the buzzword on everybody’s lips as Marks & Spencer launched their ‘Plan A’ initiative, Estethica at London Fashion Week celebrated its first birthday, eco brands starting shedding their hippy hides and our favourite high street labels from Monsoon to Primark gave us some organic cotton ranges.

Crystal Renn

curves became the new teeny with models like Crystal Renn fronting high profiles such as Dolce & Gabbana and strutting down the Gautier catwalk alongside a whole host of body-con trends.

Boombox was the only place to be seen with The New Cool Kids Agyness Deyn, Henry Holland, Giles Deacon, Gareth Pugh, Jodie Harsh and more heralding the return of the underground realised in New Rave. We donned our slogan tees (‘Drop beats not bombs’), pixelated hoodies, 20p machine jewellery and glo, glo, gloed to the sounds of Klaxons and CSS.

Christopher Kane

…London Fashion Week saw a welcome return of Matthew Williamson (who also celebrated ten years in the business at the Design Museum) and Luella Bartley. Whilst Stella returned to launch her Adidas range adding glitz to an already triumphant return of the British Fashion Industry thanks to fresh talent like Christopher Kane, Clare Tough, Louise Goldin, Manish Arora and Marios Schwab to name a few.

The Golden Age of Couture V&A

…Christian Dior's ‘New Look celebrated its fiftieth anniversary under the creative mastery of John Galliano whilst couture received a well-deserved recognition at the V&A’s ‘The Golden Age of Couture’ exhibition. ‘The Face of Fashion’ was also a storming success at the National Portrait gallery.

Chalayan bubble dress

…fashion went futuristic with bubble dresses at Hussein Chalayan, slinky skinnies at Balenciaga and structured robotics at Dolce & Gabbana. Metallics remain the fabric of choice whilst oversized gems and sequins went overload.

…we also took inspiration from Iraqi soldiers in those tea-towel scarves - a fashion meets politics statement. It was hosiery’s year with leggings and footless tights making a firm comeback.

Gucci print dress

….dresses were the item we couldn’t live without and took the guise of printed shifts, sack shapes and maxi’s.

Balenciaga

…collections of the year included Balenciaga’s sexy sci-fi kit with those metal plate trousers, Dior’s ode to couture in shocks of jewel bright colours, Prada’s ‘ugly chic’ techno textiles, Manish Arora’s rainbow prints and Alexander McQueen’s dark Egyptian glamour.

…press sweetheart of the year award definitely went to Christopher Kane with his debut neon-rococo winning over many a fashionista including the queen of sexy glamour Donatella Versace. P.S look out for more Scots taking over the catwalk with the likes of Deryck Walker and Aimee McWilliams.

…we said goodbye to fashion’s real icons Isabella Blow and Gianfranco Ferre whilst Valentino waved his last catwalk and Donatella Versace reflected on ten years of Gianni’s passing.

So that’s 2007 in a nutshell, who knows what 2008 will bring? We can’t wait to find out…
