What is Haulage? And A-Z of Haulage Firms Print E-mail

What is Haulage?

Haulage is the inland carriage of cargo or containers between named locations.

What are the types of Vehicles?

The main vehicles used in road transportation are Articulated Lorries or (Artics). They consist of 2 parts, the truck and trailer. Standard trailer types include:

  • Box trailer - The most common type of trailer can haul almost anything that can fit inside. Also called a van trailer.

  • Curtain-sider - A curtain-sider is similar to a box trailer except that the sides are movable curtains made of reinforced fabric coated in with a waterproof coating. The purpose of a curtain-sider is to allow the security and weather resistance of a box trailer with the ease of loading of a flatbed.

  • Flatbed trailer - Consists of just a load floor and removable side rails, and a bulkhead in front to protect the tractor in the event of a load shift. Can haul almost anything that can be stacked on it and strapped down.

  • Low-loaders – a type of flatbed in which the load floor is as close to the ground as possible. Most commonly used to haul heavy equipment, cranes, bulldozers, etc. often used for transporting heavy machinery and other outsize goods. Set low to the ground for easy loading.

  • Swap-body system - built to accommodate standard cargo containers. Allows containers to be swiftly transferred during intermodal transport.

  • Tilt trailer - like a flatbed trailer, but with a removable PVC canopy.

For smaller cargoes Vans are generally used.

During transportation drivers are responsible for the security of the goods and following max weight, width and length restrictions of 40 tonnes, 2.55 metres and 16.5 metres. The traders are responsible for packing the goods in a suitable dunnage, or protective wrapping, and for any damaged caused to the vehicle during loading and unloading (if they are the party responsible for loading/unloading).

What contracts are there?

The standard contract for internationally transported goods is the CMR note. The CMR note is a consignment note that confirms that the carrier (i.e. the road haulage company) has received the goods and that a contract of carriage exists between the trader and the carrier. Full guidelines to completing the contract can be found here on the UNECE website. The contract will require information on; name and addresses of the sender carrier and consignee, , description of goods, weight of goods, other related charges and instructions for customs any other formalities.
