Fashions Ugly Fringe Print E-mail
By Petrina De Gouttes

I know for a fact that I am not the only one to feel this way, but why fringing? The way that I feel about fringing is the exact way that Carrie Bradshaw felt when Miranda’s water broke on her Louboutins: EURGH! (But well done on Miranda, those shoes had tassels…)

Consequently, it’s okay to wear fringing if you’re an 80s rock star suffering from nostalgia, but otherwise, why do it to yourself? Unnecessary detailing that does nothing for your figure but make you look like Indiana Jones’ long lost sidekick! Oh dear, and there I was anticipating Gareth Pugh’s S/S 08 collection to be confronted by my enemy. I had hoped that fringing would stay in vintage caves hanging off unwilling cowboy boots to never find the dawn of day, but no.

Gareth Pugh S/S 08

Fair play to Pugh for trying to integrate the detail into S/S 08 fashions, but even if it is in vogue, who will wear it? Imagine the scenario; you are aimlessly strolling down Piccadilly, the wind blowing through your hair, and then you suddenly get hit around the ankles but someone 5 metres away from you. You turn to witness a 6-foot giant, looking as thought they have stepped off the runway, in broad daylight wearing Pugh, hurrying off to catch the next tube. Do you think a) Wow! I must find out where she got that from so I can wear it to work tomorrow or b) She is one brave girl? I’d go with the latter, because the former wouldn’t even cross your mind.

Prada A/W 07/08

This season Prada displayed a liking for fringing, dressing models in knee length shreds of it in the form of skirts and coats. Less over done than Pugh, I guess it’s just about bearable as well as wearable.
