Caren Downie is a pivotal cog in the well-oiled machine that we all know as TopShop. As Buying Director for the influential chain Caren is also heavily involved with the New Generation sponsorship scheme and London’s emerging fashion talent. Here she talks London Fashion Week, TopShop collaborations and personal style…
Caren: I was very flattered - I love being involved with New Gen it is an initiative to be proud of.
Caren: It was fantastic, really showcasing the best of what London has to offer - the best London Fashion Week for years.
Favourite shows for me were Marios Schwab, Todd Lynn, Armand Basi, Roksanda Ilincic and Jonathan Saunders.
Caren: London has always been seen as the creative capital but this season ticked all the boxes for slick, professional shows whilst still taking creative risks and having fun.
Caren: I think the shows were great this season but the exhibition still needs some improving. Q For new designers out there that are interested in applying for New Gen sponsorship what's the drill regarding applications?
Caren: Designers must apply to Katie Bain at the British Fashion Council for an application form (Tel: 020 7636 7788 ). The dates have yet to be confirmed for the next applications and will be posted on the BFC website at www.londonfashionweek.co.uk
Caren: It is something that is always a concern and initiatives such as the Fashion Forward award have been set up by the BFC and Westfield to help in this area. But more can be done.
Caren: I do have to plan - especially for Fashion Week!!
Caren: Quite a few: we are excited about our first tailoring collaboration with Todd Lynn and also collections with Louise Goldin and Danielle Scutt.
Caren: I already have a fab Preen dropped armhole coat with a great tie detail at the back. I did think I wanted a pair of jodhpurs until I saw Todd Lynn's trouser collection!! And shoes are always on the list - a pair of Marios Schwab for Scorah Pattullo.

Q How did it feel to be credited as an industry mover and shaker - a key player that is fundamental to the industry in the Telegraph recently?
Caren: Luxe Sports was a key trend, easy-to-wear shapes in luxury fabrics; a relaxed silhouette of cropped and casual trousers but still maintaining tailored jackets although they are becoming larger and more masculine. In contrast there were lots of romantic ruffles and florals. Another key print direction was ombres and tie-dyes. Colours had a very neutral focus from grey through to nudes and lots of black and white. Key highlights were geranium pinks and aquatic blues.
Q How about your own personal style - are you more a throw it on and go or an outfit planner?
Q Any exciting Designer/Topshop collaborations coming out soon that you can tell us about?
