Street Style: Print-tastic Print E-mail
Although the sun may not have been shining much this summer, a whole plethora of prints are brightening up the high street.

Decorative paisley, ethnic or folkloric-inspired designs prove a key summer print story. Inspiration comes from Matthew Williamson, Anna Sui, Etro and Gucci’s spring/summer catwalk shows. Geometrics are equally directional, especially scaled up to create bold colour-blocked effects. Both print themes will carry through to next season.

Geometrics work also as smaller interlocking repeats. Intersecting circular geometrics reference Op-Art design, while swirling geometrics are reminiscent of classic Pucci prints. White keeps palettes fresh, while areas of black add depth.

Floral print and pattern has got to be the hottest print trend of the season, with past decades plundered for inspiration in the form of bold sixties and seventies-style floral and psychedelic-style designs. Ornamental Art Nouveau style repeats are in keeping with the floral theme, although the bolder the better for flat graphic motifs as flower power gets another re-working.

Abstract Matisse-inspired effects are hot for younger, edgier styling in off-beat colour combinations such as jade, indigo, yellow, black and white. Prints can suit every age group however, with all-over, placement and conversational designs adorning smock-tops, summer dresses, and accessories.

Going forward to next season, expect to see 50’s-inspired prints overtaking recent sixties and seventies looks.  Big-scale geometric abstracts will prove key, not to mention art deco influences.
