Duration:      Two years, full time

This programme is offered in conjunction with Staffordshire University and is designed to prepare students for a wide range of possible occupations within the fashion industry. There are also opportunities for one year ‘top-up’ and advanced entry to degree programmes.

We pride ourselves on offering a varied fashion-related programme that aspires to develop creative, practical and technically able individuals.  Throughout, we also aim to develop student’s critical and analytical skills to produce well-rounded HND graduates who are able to move smoothly and confidently into professional practice/employment or further education, dependent on individual needs.  When qualified, our students are able to work comfortably across a variety of disciplines including fashion design, garment realisation, fashion directions and fashion communications.

Work placements are integrated into the course and recent student placements have included:

Betty Jackson                                      Harvey Nichols

Matthew Williamson                            Aimee McWilliams

Patrick Cox                                          John Lewis

Next                                                     Birmingham Repertory Theatre

Adams                                                 Julien MacDonald

Dazed and Confused Magazine           Nathan Jenden

All students are encouraged to take part in the annual residential trips, which may include London, Paris, Barcelona, Milan or New York.  Students also usually have the opportunity to visit a major trade show (such as Premiere Vision) during their HND.

The annual student fashion show provides a showcase for final collections and project work. Final year students also produce a static exhibition. All students are invited to submit work for consideration for the Clotheshow Live at the Birmingham N.E.C. - the biggest fashion and beauty event in the world.

Additional Course Costs

Applicants applying for courses of this nature should be aware that although the college makes a financial contribution towards material, the cost of additional materials should not be ignored when considering the total expense involved.  It should be noted that the extra expense depends on the quality of materials chosen by the student.  This will be covered further at interview.

Additionally, students will be expected to attend the residential visits as part of the course requirements and a work placement.

Entry Requirements

Students must be at least 18 years of age and should also have completed at least one of the following:

·           BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Fashion, Textiles or art related subject

·           BTEC Advanced GNVQ Art & Design

·           BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design

Typical candidates would also show a strong GSCE profile, including English at Grade C, or equivalent. We look for motivated, ambitious and enthusiastic fashion-directed students who are eager to apply and extend their talents, learn new skills and develop their understanding of the fashion industry. A minimum point score of 120 at level 3 is usual.

Students who do not match this profile but have an exceptionally strong portfolio may be considered on individual merit at interview.
