Having a bad hair day? Perhaps hair should have its own cult...
Hair matters. We all know it does. As with each decade comes a different hairstyle: the 60’s saw the beehive, the 70’s the mighty Afro and with the 80s came Bananarama haircuts. Yet, I can only reflect on the 90’s. A decade known for the rise of extremely cheesy pop bands; with girls who wore scrunches and boys with curtain fringes. Hair should perhaps have its own cult. With the different shampoos, conditioners, hairsprays, the latter of which continues to add to the destruction of the o-zone layer, and gels that are on offer to us, it could have a mighty following.
Friends of mine are obsessed with their hair! I’ll never forget the day a good friend cut off her gorgeous dark glossy locks, to don a short hairstyle that I haven’t seen her with since Primary School. She regretted it, but I thought she looked great! A good hairstyle also seems to be the route to confidence, which is probably the main reason I change my hair quite often.
Recently I got rid of my full fringe, which I grew accustomed to in early December. The look became draining; it no longer looked ‘fresh and clean’. I don’t know how Anna Wintour does it, sticking with the same hairstyle year after year, but then again it has become her signature style right? The full fringe just created far too many problems for me. I could no long wear sunglasses; none suited me, and I practically tried on every pair in Selfridges! Also with the summer sun emerging this was just not ideal. So I’ve now opted for a side fringe - constantly getting in my eye, but at least it goes with my sunglasses! (Yes, I did basically change my hair to suit the season…).
Talking of seasons, as fashion has its certain trends for each new season; it appears that hair has the same biannual affair. What you choose to wear reflects on you as a person, it can potentially let people know of the region you reside in (think white stiletto’s and I guarantee you’ll conjure up an image of a leggy Essex blonde.) As well as giving people some kind of insight into the genre of music you enjoy. Now, take this perspective and project it onto the silky world of hair. Think WAG, and you will think ‘extensions!’ Think Tommy Lee in his heyday, and you will think ‘mullet!’ Think indie lurker of the Shoreditch hotspots, and you will think ‘Lego haircuts!’ It’s a sure thing.
So I wonder curiously what the people at Vidal Sassoon will think up for the coming season? By Petrina De Gouttes |
