Winner of the New Designer accolade at the British Fashion Awards this year, Greek-born Marios Schwab has taken the fashion world by storm. His creations have been welcomed and celebrated by fashion editors far and wide and his clothes worn by fashion conscious celebrities such as Kylie, Kate Moss and Hilary Duff.
But what is it exactly, that has made Schwab’s designs so popular in the ever-changing and illustrious world of fashion? All you have to do is view his stunning collections to know. Inspired by the likes of the corporeal and sensual designer Alaia, Schwab has managed to recreate the look of the nineties with a fabulous twist. He is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting new British designers to emerge within recent years.
Implicitly cutting-edge, Schwab’s Autumn/Winter 2006/07 collection showed great promise with a distinct hint of exhilarating freshness. One explanatory quote for his creations, as spied in The Observer Magazine; “I design around the body,” clearly shows he is a designer with a feel for the truly feminine. His clothes have been superbly constructed around the curves and contours of the female form. They are eye-catchingly simple yet hugely dramatic, with breast sculpturing and short hemlines being at the forefront of each design.
Schwab does not seem to experiment a great deal with colour in his collections and in all honesty, the mass of black designs punctured occasionally by sweeping swirls of deep red, appear to suit his creations all the more. Adding his own twist to a familiar item seems to be a favourite method of Schwab’s and the simple black dresses that he created as part of the Autumn/Winter collection were fantastically daubed with splashes of Midas gold. The chic eccentricity he gives to his clothes while maintaining their simple brilliance is what has placed this young designer in the top spot.
Schwab’s Spring/Summer 2007 collection has continued to dazzle and amaze. Still sporting that signature shade of black, his creations have been speckled, this time, with lighter shades of ivory, grey and white. He has taken a step away from the loose-fitting shapes that are being portrayed for Spring/Summer by the likes of Dries Van Noten and Marc Jacobs and has opted instead for a figure-hugging silhouette. Schwab’s designs can only be described as walking shadows; there is not a thing out of place.
The short skirts, tight trousers and crisp underwear-like sculptured tops are perfect for those younger women that love to show off their legs, bare flesh and bring attention to their bust. The high-waisted skirts are flattering to the midriff while still curving brilliantly around the buttocks creating a tantalisingly sexy and ultra-feminine image.
It is clear how Schwab has become such a firm favourite in the early days of his career. He has a true talent for creating simple yet dramatically engaging clothes. Extremely hot right now, he is rightfully regarded by most as exceptionally talented. So what next for Marios Schwab? Hopefully some more of those beautifully authentic designs.
