Recycling is meant to be good for the environment, so maybe the reuse idea works in the world of fashion?
It’s amazing how designers can take inspiration from different decades, yet make it fresh and new. Mary Quant’s mini-skirt has been integrated into fashion countless times, and that was designed 40 years ago! I see a mini-skirt everyday, in school, at the weekend and in magazines, regardless of what season it is. No matter who you are, at one point in your life you would have worn one.
On Sunday morning a friend and I was watching a music channel when ‘Kiss from a Rose’, a song by the singer Seal, came on. Towards the end of the video my friend said: “Oh my gosh! It’s TopShop!” I soon realised that the models in the 1993 video had a striking resemblance to those fronting the latest TopShop look. Shift dresses, cute bobbed hair and full fringes- all echoes of the 60’s. The sixties look is on the rise, and this time I’m around to enjoy it! I’ll still be conscious of wearing the mini-dress that I bought the other day, but it’s time to be daring and embrace what fashion is offering us for the coming season – even if we think we’ve seen it all before.
