Women dressing as men is one of the key looks of the season. But how are you meant to pull that off when you're a 15-year old schoolgirl from Essex!
I was ecstatic when I read in Glamour magazine that you can now get away with wearing your boyfriend's clothes on the High Street. I got excited when I saw that Gap had started producing elegant skinny trousers alongside boyish fitted blazers at H&M. That's until I realised that no one under the age of 18 could carry off the masculine look. A 15-year old girl, walking around in wide leg trousers, ladies lace-up tan shoes and a crisp white shirt, could not get away with wearing that in their local suburbs! It's okay if you're wearing it in Central London though, simply because it's expected of you. London is such a diverse place, that you can get away with wearing your pyjamas in Camden! But in the suburbs there is that gap.

It is there where your predators lurk; the girls in bubble gum pink velour jump suits and the boys in La Coste tracksuits, all of whom have never heard of the place 'London' or the term 'Fashion'. Therefore, they convince themselves that you're dressed up just to walk your local High Street. At times I really want to wear a placard saying: "I'M ON MY WAY TO COVENT GARDEN!" I want to be able to wear the boyish look as it's European, sophisticated and it takes the term 'masculinity' on an adventure to the fabulous feminine world. Petrina De Gouttes
