Designers played with a penchant for volume throughout their autumn/winter 05/06 collections, and although not a trend which is entirely commercial, it’s safe to say it has begun to make it’s transition onto the streets.
Exaggerated silhouettes such as capes and generous blousons are key, from cropped cape/jackets to longer sowester-style structures as seen at Karen Walker. Wide shawl collars or lapels balance out the silhouette and bell sleeves prove a key detail. Slashed sleeves are a hot detail for cape-like jackets and balloon sleeves create extra torso volume for winter coats. Cinched in waists help balance puffed out rather than bulky silhouettes.
Although voluminous silhouettes are impacting on winter coat silhouettes, knitwear and jersey are benefiting from roomier proportions also, as are some of the season’s key trends. Military styling gets a twist as does traditional fabrics such as tweeds and heavy woollens, not to mention chequered pattern-ways. Watch for volume impacting on other garments such as skirts and dresses as the eighties once again become a key style reference point. If you want to avoid more overt puffball styling opt for a tulip skirt - a definite must-have item for next spring. A satinised version in time for the party season ensures your finger is exactly on the fashion pulse.
