Nalini’s Diary- The last word

Completely devastated! Those have to be my last words on the closing of the LFF boutique at Bluewater. I suppose there is always that old adage as one door closes another opens but I still can’t believe why anyone, any Government body or agency would want to close such a successful project.

There are many acknowledgements that I am going to make, but the first and foremost must go to my team at Bluewater and the London Fashion Forum head office team. The support and motivation over the past year to promote the designers and the success of the project is completely owed to them because the effort and commitment has been overwhelming and this contributed to everyone’s brilliant achievements. Special thanks go to: Clare, Ruth, Melvine, Saran, Gemma, Tracey, Rachel skinner, Rachel Costa, Hayleigh, Vanessa, Stephanie and, of course, Jenny Holloway. The project would have never have escalated to the high degree of achievement, without these people as the core foundation.

Let’s talk first about the accomplishments and progress that the designers and the LFF made through this project. We had a retail outlet in Bluewater! This is such a fantastic achievement. Bluewater is currently one of the largest shopping centres throughout Europe with over a ‘100 fashion houses’, three department stores, over 40 bars and restaurants, its own cinema and many other recreational facilities.

Bluewater gave the foundation for the designers to sell in a commercial market, and create the products to suit that clientele. Bluewater Management Team themselves were incredibly supportive of the project and welcomed the new innovative businesses. The boutique provided newness and excitement as each week new merchandise was displayed by new designers.

The concept of the boutique was to have a rent free period – we had to pay a service charge however! It was the rates that we could not support at a staggering £11k a month who on earth could pay that but the big brands themselves such as the Topshops of the world.

Nevertheless, despite this obstacle of funding the rates bill we had glorious success and saved many designers from going out of business by providing that much need “genuine” access to market. The designers have had a valuable learning experience and some have received sales of tens of thousands of pounds The designers now need to use the project to an advantage and it has provided necessary evidence and figures behind your label to go further.

I would like now to run through some of the designers that made Bluewater Boutique store such a success – in the last twelve months we have built up an impressive clientele that was loyal and dedicated to fashion.

Femini- This label came to the LFF boutique in April of this year, and straight away became one of the biggest and amazing designers available in the boutique. Femini spring/summer range was the hottest and unique occasional wear to buy. The Wedding season, Ascot, Christenings, Balls, were all perfectly suited for Femini and the value for money is outstanding. The winter collection brought along beautiful dresses, coats all in original designs and again excellent value. Femini would be perfectly suited as a concession in a department store House of Fraser, or even in a boutique its own right. This designer is certainly destined for stardom and needs to be appreciated.

·        Romeo Pires- The most amazing and strikingly different designer that I have seen in a long time, and this was certainly reflected in his sales figures and consumer response. The label included tops, skirts, dresses, blazers all covered in fantastically bright bold prints that will certainly get you the attention you crave! Romeo Pires is available in Topshop Oxford Circus, Spitalfields market and various other boutiques around the globe. They are continuously expanding and should become a well established fashion brand one day. The collection was a personal favourite to many of the staff.

·        Tanya Dove- Talented designer with superb collections for occasional wear. Appealing and flattering tops and dresses, mostly using silk and other luxurious fabrics. There are intricate designs that are imaginative and fun to wear. This designer is very successful.

·        Actar Actar- This label was perfect for the Bluewater customer, as it was very commercial and easy to wear, at an affordable high street price. These two talented designers were valuable to the boutique and particularly good at recognising market demand and then providing a quick reaction to stock to capitalise on the market need.

·        Claudette Joseph- Exquisite coats, made with a signature collar and ribbon design, generally made form wool. Great for customers who wanted to stand out from the crowd and be noticed. There is no other coat on the market that has the refinement of Claudette Joseph.

·        Forest- Intricately beaded and detailed garments, with a high quality production. Occasional wear, suited to all markets looking for that extra special classic piece. This brand is perfectly suited to high end exclusive concessions.

·        Red Stones- Young and funky prints in cute dresses and tops that can be worn from day to evening. First rate value for money, and very easy to wear garment, this designers was very popular with customers.

·        Mami London- Urban trendy brand, with fabulous dresses, jackets and t- shirts, that is comfortable to wear at an affordable price.

·         Julia Van Caysel- Lovely collection, appealing to all ages, with dresses, tops and jackets to flatter most shapes. Every woman feels feminine and special in these garments. Julia’s designs are a personal favourite of mine.

·        Emure- Exceptionally unique dresses that grab the attention of the figure conscious body that wants to look gorgeous and eye-catching. The Go get Dress which is designed to fit any body silhouette making every woman feel extraordinary and stunning.

·        Mertel and George- This is also a very commercial label and made a hit with the customer from the day they launched into the boutique. The shapes of the dresses and tops suit most women and are easy to wear to a variety of occasions.

·        Cinema x- Punky brand, very trendy and suits the younger market and sold quite well. They also have a very successful website www.cinemax.co.uk and are featured on www.fashioncapital.co.uk. This is also available for other designers to advertise as well, do get in touch to advertise.

·        JPK- Urban, one off vintage label, with pieces that were limited due to their exclusivity and exceptionally trendy. A varied market appreciated this clothing, mainly young and they continuously sold very well.

·        Georgee ready to wear- This collection was again perfect for the Bluewater consumer, at valued prices and easy to wear designs. There was also the opportunity for customer to have special garment fit requests from this designer, good marketing and was gratefully appreciated by the customers..

·        Trend Station- Bright and up lifting underwear brand that will be set for higher things. The quality is excellent, design is outstanding and the owner Majeic Wilan is fantastic. He is always so diligent and full of enthusiasm. He will be showcasing at Clotheshow Live in December 2nd-7th and this will be perfect for this label.

·        Melanka and me- These designers created both children’s and women’s wear brand that was particularly noted for its different and creative dresses in ethnic fabrics. In particular they were the winners of the Huw Williams Tribute Award and a personal favourite of Isabella Blow too.

·        Natasia- Handbags for casual wear, and intricate vintage style evening bags, at a great price, these were the best selling accessory brand in the boutique.

·        ICY- Great metallic handbags in a variety of shapes and styles, made from real leather and fabulous quality.

·        Rebel Dogg- A very stylish leather brand of belts and bags to jazz up any outfit, perfect for changing your look and having something classier any belt available on the high street. Now being stocked in Whistles this is one brand that will elevate through the ranks and make it “large scale” in the UK and beyond. Another Bluewater staff favourite!

·        Longfordrockers- The brightest furriest bags you ever seen, along with tutu’s and p.v.c corsets, it the ultimate “gothic” brand going. They are also available at Camden market

·        Pure Sagacity- Precious stones made into interesting jewellery that complement particular emotions. Each piece comes beautifully gift wrapped with a certificate to describe the benefit of each product – again clever marketing that just makes that difference to the customers. Great label for gift ideas.

·        Gillian Rice Jewellery- Lovely original designs; would be a great accessory brand for Christmas shoppers.

Unfortunately I have not mentioned all the designers that did contribute to Bluewater, but everybody that entered the boutique certainly had the advantage to merchandise their label within the best atmosphere you can find – it was filled with raw passion and genuine fun and excitement unlike many of the boring high streets of today.

I would still like to thank all the designers that did exhibit at the boutique. Who knows what the future may bring but I do know that Jenny is working on a host of other options so keen your eyes peeled for information on the two websites.

Nalini’s Dairy- After the Easter break @ Bluewater

The regulars are remaining faithful, and many are relying on us to dress them for their holidays and big events. With more and more new stock coming in, the customers follow happily, as we can see from the pictures from the week, we can see the customers and staff alike adoring these new collections.

Here we have the staff trying ‘Mami London’s’ latest jacket, which has been a hit over the weekend, already nearly sold out completely, being a useful item to wear casually and to easily dress up for most occasions. ‘Emure’ has also brought in some new lines, as seen in this picture a customer trying on the godet dress in aqua, these were so popular, just in one day we sold out! There are also more jersey dresses in bright prints and an additional lingerie collection. ‘Actar actar’ have also extended their spring look with more casual skirts and dresses as seen here which are again helpful garments to have, as they can be used for either day or eveningwear. ‘Actar actar’ have also used bright colours as an attraction to their market, by introducing prints like the following top  being very pretty and incorporating all the top colours for the season.

In the next week or so the boutique will change its window, to a new theme which is still under discussion at the moment, but to get ideas, as always we looked at neighbouring shops at Bluewater for inspiration! To our advantage ‘Republic’ has opened a new store this week just below the boutique, so we checked it out! The team and I came to the conclusion the shop was definitely worth the refit and the labels available in store are top notch! The window idea is very appealing, spread out into three separate windows, and the centre window being occupied by not only mannequins; on the staff’s tea breaks at the weekend, they have the option of taking a break in the window for all to see!

Obviously this became a popular idea for our own window, but I do not think we can adopt this ideal I’m afraid our window space is far to narrow! The labels available in store are: Bench, Hooch, French connection (which are probably the labels that are too widely available from Bluewater), Von Dutch (which I felt was the biggest let down to the whole shop!), Replay denim and G-star for men and women. I was particularly impressed with G-star for women, because there are not many places in the UK that stock this, and they are a good quality denim brand.

The boutique should hopefully be getting some new designers coming our way including the following who have shown particular interest Evelyn Stone, Frocked, Elisabeth Poppe, Strumpets, more bridal designers and many more who have been calling me since Profile5. I am very excited about the new stock and the continuous growth of the store, the customers are always excited to see our new additions so it will be great for sales as soon as they all come in. If anyone who has beach wear or knows or anyone who perhaps sell well at Bluewater please do call me and get in touch.

Nalini's Diary- 1/04/05

Spring is here!

I have seen the beautiful blossoms on the tress, heard the birds singing, and when I get out of work I do not need to switch my car lights on anymore, how exciting.  All of the Bluewater shoppers are searching for little vest tops, pretty skirts and bright colours, because yes now is the time to wear them.  If we do not make the most of the nice days we have, before we know it they will be over!

I am planning to make a statement at the social gatherings I have got; I will wear my ‘Emure’ orange dress, and ‘actar actar’ orange top.  Shops at Bluewater are already stocking bikinis, flip-flops and sunglasses ready for customer vacations.  Many people are still planning their wedding outfit and summer gowns with balls fast approaching.  So designers get your new stock in fast!

Bluewater is always warm and bright, (it’s a centre!) but people dress up in the most summery of outfits here and they expect the shops to provide the same.  Little skirts are getting a lot of attention as is pretty much anything you can match up your Birkenstocks or wedges with!  We have all noticed feet have come out from hiding, and so everyone is looking for garments to show their new pedicured feet, and considering we are not huge on trousers, our stock is great!

We have noticed also that retro and bohemian patterns are still going strong; our boutique is still providing some commercial choices of design, which honestly do very well here.  However, it is the colour that seems to be aesthetically pleasing to the customer, anything in bold colours will do well here because colour is what will get a woman noticed, and spring and summer are the seasons to get away with making such a bright statement.

The pictures this week have definitely been of new stock, even though Tanya Dove and Forest still manage to sell well in their winter stock, the summer stock is what grasps the attention of shoppers.  Daniella Benson’s classic style incorporates fun prints and is beautifully bright, and the team managed to put lots of outfits together with her collection, as they did with Forest and Claudette Joseph, shown below:

 Claudette Joseph

Daniella Benson

Hommebody has also been a pleasure for customers to try on, looking even better off the hanger than on!  The fabulous combination of comfort and flattery makes Hommebody products a great success, as demonstrated below by this customer who looked stunning in her new ball outfit.

Hommebody

Romeo Pieres is still selling well, and this customer said ‘I love the fact it’s a taxi, and cannot wait for the new prints.’

Romeo Pieres

So new stock is the issue and is desperately needed by our customers, in particularly the regular customers, who love the designers, but just need new items to wear as they now have everything else!  Natasia bags and Longford Rockers bags are favourites for the customers, and they have also been warming to the new Tit fer Tat headdresses and hats, accessories are going well, it is now only shoes that we do not stock!

Mami London

All in all Bluewater has certainly picked up, so now the main aim is to maintain the interest, with our new styles filtering I look forward to the great sales that follow for all the designers.

Nalini’s Diary- 14/03/05

More exciting new opportunities appeared in our favour at Bluewater this week. Bluewater has decided to set up a style consultancy clinic, which meant a stylist (Anna Moore) would personal shop with clients in the stores that offered good product and service. When I heard the news I straight away contacted the stylist, as I wanted our store to be her first stop just so I could show her customers would be well kitted out with the wide range of designers that we offer.

My meeting with her went very well, we discussed that the majority of her customers called on her as an advisor especially if they were planning special occasions, and most of our cliental relied on the fact that our products were unique and perfect for special occasions, gifts, etc. Particular designers that sparked her interest were; Natasia, Ann Ann, Forest, Romeo Pieres, Claudette Joseph and Nadia Ivanova.

After discussing all the designers qualities within the store and the uses for a variety of consumer, Anna told me she would find LFF a very useful store to probably suit a large part of her market. This was fantastic news and just gave us the extra promotion that we needed. The following day after Anna’s visit I received another phone call from her asking if she could photograph a particular Forest outfit that she wanted to use as press for the Bluewater magazine, and she had clients interested in the boutique already! I took this as great news!

Just one day after this stylist wanting to use the Bluewater store, another stylist rang inquiring for Toni and Guy in Colchester, whom had heard about our store from the fashion show in Bluewater, when their branch had helped do the hair for us. This stylist said because of the fantastic collections we had, this would complement their catwalk show very well. To promote LFF in conjunction with Toni and Guy, I will ask for press in the use of our designers. She will be visiting me later next week to pick what outfits she needs. This still proves that being at Bluewater and holding the fashion show has definitely generated good contacts and awareness for us.

This week we have had a new designer join us ‘Daniella Benson’, who has an original collection of patch work and rich fabrics. The collection is lovely and bright, great for spring, with lots of cute tops, blazers and fabulous skirts. The shirts are classically cut perfect for casual wear, and definitely have appealed to the more mature customer (25+).

Forest has also given me new stock in the past couple of weeks, which slots in nicely to the wedding and ladies day outfits that everyone seems to desire at the moment. However, Forest’s winter stock seems to still be selling well because it also fits these categories and it is very versatile for the spring look as well.

I also had more new stock from Natasia, Tanya dove, Tit Fer Tat, Claudette Joseph Red Stones and Mami. These labels continue to sell well and to keep this their market they also need to acquire interest, new stock is very important to maintain our consumers, if you have not given me new styles this year, I will plea with you to do so as soon as possible, to raise your chances of being a best seller!

Nalini’s Diary-Organizing the big show……

This week has been so exciting, I love organizing the fashion and seeing the progress we have made. Please first take a look at the team’s point of views on the show:

·        Alice ‘I’m so glad the fashion show is going ahead. It’s a brilliant way for the designers to get their clothes, etc shown more to the public. People will see how tasteful some of clothes are and will hopefully remember the designer’s name. It’s also a real chance for people to know that LFF is in Bluewater and understand what we’re about rather than just thinking we’re another shop.

·        Ruth ‘The fashion show is a good way to get people more aware of LFF and more interested in our shop. Fashion shows always generate a huge amount of interest and hopefully people will see that we are different from the rest of the shops in Bluewater, we offer a personal touch and unique style of retail.

·        Saran ‘I am really looking forward to the fashion show it will bring awareness to LFF and also the designers, more people will then shop in the shop and also know what it is about! This will also be a good experience for everyone working at LFF! Will see you there!

·        Melvine ‘I think the fashion show is a great idea! It will be good in the future; a great and good “kick” for the sales, to meet new customers (and to let them know what’s going on!), meet new designers let them know what the shop and campaign is all about. Fashion is not only inside London, but it’s in Bluewater with great designers and new and different styles of fashion.’

·        Rachel C ‘The Bluewater fashion show is a great opportunity for all the designers to showcase their collections to the general public and to raise awareness of LFF. This will be a show to remember and one not to miss, so I look forward to seeing you all there, for the boutique’s first fashion show!

·        Ron BLUEWATER FASHION SHOW IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL THE DESIGNER’S TO PROMOTE THEIR PRODUCT AND IT WILL BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR LFF. I’M SURE EVERYONE WILL HAVE GOOD TIME. THIS WILL ALSO BE A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PUBLIC TO MEET THE DESIGNER’S.

I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO BE THERE ON THAT DAY………………

“FASHION IS JUST NOT TO WEAR ANY THING, IT’S AN ART……..”

These are the team’s point of view which has been really positive, and they have been a great support these past couple of weeks so a big thank you to them for pulling the shop through, to the high standard that it has been in without me.

Okay, so firstly I have spend most of my time these past few weeks on the phone to various different people, and the outcome of this has been: The press seem to be warming up to us so there hopefully should be a few mags. and newspapers to see us, also Bluewater’s press have called me and want to be involved, so there has been some response in that department. RAH productions are taking over the production side to the show and so it should completely professional and fantastic with the theatrical catwalk show they plan to put on! Sponsorship wise, I have to show a lot of gratitude towards the following companies who of which have been very helpful and are also getting involved with the shows: ‘Biotherm’- who will be supporting by providing their make up expertise for the models and will be giving out some goodie bags. ‘Toni and Guy’ – will be helping out with the hair on the mornings of the events, huge hand needs to go out for their stylists giving up their time. Shoes wise the following stores have offered to help: ‘Russell and Bromley’, ‘Monde a Pelle’, ‘Dune’ and I’m still waiting on replies from ‘Mr. Shoe’ and ‘Office’. On the food front I may even have ‘Krispy Crème Doughnuts’ giving a helping hand. I really feel the response I have had from these companies has given me more and more confidence in the show, and so we are moving forward quickly. The stylist for the show arrives this week to determine what will be in the show so they can piece together what style we will go for.

In the mist of all the planning, phoning and organizing, we have still had the shop to control, with the customers that love the stock and the unique nature of each designer and seem very enthusiastic about the show- absolutely every customer has been told, there are flyers in most shops and everybody we all know is coming. I expect the crowds. However, the best sellers in the shop over the New Year have been; Tanya Dove, Romeo Pieres, Tit fer Tat, Wale Adeymei, Red Stones and Mami. However, the consumer is now bored of sale stock, I need new stock now, that’s what they want so to sell, that’s what I need to get from people, so gradually people are bringing stock in for us to see. Also new designers that maybe joining us are: ‘Strumpets’ these are a product that turn any ordinary pair of shoes into a fab pair of boots; ‘Global Guru’ these are a selection of retro scarves and another child’s wear label should be coming into the store before the show.

PUT PICTURES IN THIS PARAGRAPH

Customers this month have been caught on camera trying on the fav. pieces on  ‘Tanya Dove’ was a popular piece to have as you can see this lady trying a beautiful number in peach, which flatters any shape due to the cut. ‘Tit fer Tat’ has been popular with everyone- even children! We had a little girl gladly pose with one of her hats looking cute. ‘Forest’ also was fairly popular in the sale, one because of the great detail put into each garment, but the sizes range up to a sixteen, which designers need to remember, the market for larger women is growing- so expand your sizes, as you can see this lady looks elegantly flattered in this dress. Also here is one of the most popular outfits in ‘Forest’ over the sale period, making everyone look glamorous. ‘Romeo Pieres’ well what can I say, women are going crazy for their outrageous prints, everyday winner at the moment, here we have a customer trying on the bird print in the short netted skirt and Ruth hailing down a taxi in her short netted skirt. First spring line I had in this month was ‘Actar Actar’ and here is another regular customer who is wearing a lovely fresh mint green top over jeans, very trendy right now this shape top and this one flatters slightly better because of the deep neck and elasticated middle.

I still need belts of some description, ‘Julie Berube’ brought me in some last week and I am nearly all sold out- belts are what everyone needs please provide, this is a plea! Everywhere has the same regurgitated product, when customers saw belts that were so unique by ‘Julie Berube’ they flew out, so very important to get a new belt designers. Here are some pictures of belt that are over worn now…..

One more thing, the shop had its first celebrity visitor this week, Shane Lynch (used to be in Boy zone), and his girlfriend took a good look at all the stock while he stood and waited for her at the front of the shop. I must say he did look good quite stylish beaten look about him and his girlfriend was quite cute!

Okay, until next week I’ll get back to you on the progress with the show and hoping to see everyone soon x

Nalini’s Diary- Spot the difference!

This week at Bluewater has definitely got to be spot the difference! The reason being that: every high street shop has the same designers or designs, and quite frankly it is getting tiresome for the customer. At first it did not notice, then gradually over the last month or so we have noticed it from what the customers have been telling us, so we decided to do some investigating. All the stores have gone over board on the ‘Sienna Miller’ look- every style we seem to see is acquainted by a bohemian pattern, which is arguably a very trendy look, I myself was a fan. However, there is nothing else available, if you are not a fan of this style, there is not much else to buy apart from a back to work suit.

As you can see from the following pictures we have a picture of Topshop and their clothes, then we have Miss Selfridge and can you see much of a difference, because we certainly couldn’t! It did not stop here even the higher market of the high street is doing the same, for example here is Kookai versus Warehouse and here is French Connection matching Oasis. The shops that we felt can always retain their originality are: Levis, Diesel, Lucy in the Sky, Miss Sixty, Ollie and Nick, Strawberry bunny and Zara. All these stores we felt had the value in their products for the consumer and manage to retain a sense of individuality apart from other stores at Bluewater. From the pictures this demonstrates a different yet trendy look for the consumer to choose from, still performing a certain sense of distinction between each designer.

This week at the shop, well after my articles last week and evaluating the success of the fashion show at Bluewater, I am glad to say I am still receiving complements about the show, and am still getting requests for particular items. For example Tanya Dove, Nadia Ivanova, Forest, Hommebody, Emure and Claudette Joseph were all particularly noticed and have brought the customers into the store. So if your stock is not in from the show, it needs to follow, even if it is small amounts at a time, the consumers need to see different stock, the same stock every week, does not sell especially to my regulars and these people need to stay impressed.

We have noticed the types of outfit that the customer is shopping for are the following either Weddings, summer ball’s, Birthday parties, modelling competitions or a killer dress to make an “ex” jealous! Fitting the bill to this has been Forest, Emure, Julie Berube, Romeo Pieres and Tanya Dove and from the following pictures you can see the consumers feeling great in their designs: It is not just customers ordering, its our team as well, me being one wanting too much, it is getting difficult being around such great stock.

Also this week we have made some great changes to the aesthetics of the store; we changed the window and made it a country garden slash hanging window. We used the ideas of hanging garments and accessories because it seems to be the trend for windows in Bluewater to have hanging items, for example ‘Topshop’ and ‘French connection’ both had great ideas, we felt hanging garments gives the theme of freshness and spring. We then took this idea one step further and incorporated this throughout the shop by hanging products from the ceiling. The gives the impressions of the boutique being full and thoughtful to our interior design too. Customers tend to notice more items in store and this Saturday we tended to sell a lot more sales of particular designers because they were hanging. I am very happy with the look to the store of I have received a lot of complements from consumers.

Looking forward to Profile 5 next week, cannot wait to see all the exhibitors and the success I am sure they will achieve from the experience!

Nalini’s Bridal wear article

On the 9th February 2005, I was sent some Bridal dresses from the Welsh textiles association. The idea was to trial these dresses on display and see what the reception was like from the market at Bluewater. I also wanted to see how Wedding friendly our shop was to the consumer, and compared our designs to other Bridal stockists in Bluewater. As a team, we took down these comparisons and the surrounding wedding ideas for outfits in photographs so please refer to these throughout.

The designers that I received in Bridal wear included: ‘Frocked’, ‘Phia’, ‘Marquessa’, ‘Julia Handy’. All were on the basis that they for display purposes only and the customer would order direct from the designer, a on ‘make to measure’ system. As soon as they were on the shop floor they were given attention for the unique and beautiful nature of the dresses. ‘Frocked’ provided us with an off the shoulder, one sleeve, red, velvet dress. This is the ideal kind of dress for the more mature bride or even as a bridesmaid’s dress, which is an original pieced and unlike any others I have seen on the market. When this arrived on the floor a lot of customers asked prices and tried on the dress. I felt the price may effect the reception from the Bluewater market and this is why we researched other wedding outfits in Bluewater.

‘Marquessa’ used a medieval theme in her dress the bodice has a tapestry type detail and the rest of the dress was in a traditional medieval shape: puff shoulder and a train, cut higher at the front. This dress made a big impression on the stylist for our Bluewater fashion show, and fitted in nicely with one of the scenes that we based on a historic theme. So response to this dress was seen quickly on the weekend to the show, customers enjoyed the design of completely dressing up for your big day. ‘Marquessa’ also offered a tiara to go with the dress, which I actually find later to be difficult to find in Bluewater. The design of this tiara entirely matches the wine and red colours of the dress and was a nice added detail to demonstrate to customers.

‘Phia’ provided us with two outfits, one being a bridal outfit. This was a long straight cut dress, lilac colour (very big this season) with an embroided design of flowers on the bottom of the dress. A matching headdress in the same intricate design then follows this embroidery and makes the outfit stunning and unusual. It again is not your classic type of dress and was contemplated more by the consumer being a second wedding or a matured Wedding dress.

‘Julia Handy’ sent the boutique two dresses, based more on the traditional shape and colour of Wedding dress. The first dress consisted of a bodice with butterfly designs on the bodice and butterflies sitting on the shoulder strap. This then is put with a huge skirt in chiffon with a train put over a large amount of netting. This was the most appealing dress to the consumer, because of its classic style of skirt and colour. The other dress still had the bodice and skirt concept with differ designs. A beautiful dragonfly beaded on the bodice and this top was done in a corset style of top, with the back tying up with ribbon. The skirt then matched, again with a long train in white, however snippets of the skirt contained the same deigns as the bodice.  All the customers interested in this dress were going for a classic type of look and said they had been disappointed with the choice they had previously seen at Bluewater and these dresses, including the other designers were refreshing.

After the consumer coming into the Boutique and commenting on the styles of dress being;

v     ‘Stunning and different to any I have seen so far’ Caroline Daily from Maidstone

v     ‘Berkertex are so boring, it’s great to finally see something I can be excited about wearing for a wedding’ Elaine Tyrrell from Dartford

v     ‘I did not necessarily want a traditional dress, I know one person who I can get in touch with…’ Debra Laws from Woolwich

This type of response led me to think what type of choice do the consumers already have at Bluewater for Wedding dresses, bridesmaids and wedding outfits and how the London Fashion Forum is now competing with this market. The shops that I investigated for specialising in this category of wear were: Berkertex, House of Frazer, Monsoon and John Lewis. Berkertex are the only specialist Bridal shop in Bluewater, which is a chain of shops up and down the UK, with the nearest shops to Bluewater being inn London.

Currently at the moment they have a big range of dresses that are available to buy off the rack on sale. Also there are a number of bodices and skirts available in a mix match style to choose from. We were unable to take many pictures for examples because you can only take pictures of the dresses once you have purchased a dress. The advice and service that they provide is quite good, as you are welcome to have a free consultation and try on a range of dresses to determine what shape suits your body best. However, all the dresses are quite traditional and not incredibly unique in their style, you could probably find a lot of women owning a very similar dress if you get a dress from here.

House of Frazer do not quote that they are Wedding specialist, but they do stock dresses that could be used as Bridal wear or Bridesmaid’s dresses. The items that we saw were quite simple and probably more suited for evening wear and perhaps a bridesmaid’s outfit, or maybe even just for someone attending a wedding. The headdresses were more impressive and suited for a Bride or mother of the bride look. However, the service does not complement the attention that a bride would need, because alterations and specialists are not really available.

Monsoon, who specialise in ball gowns and intricate work on dresses, do also stock a bridal range, and alteration services are available. The range of dress is not very wide, but the dresses are simple and pretty. Definitely I say for the less traditional wedding, and this shop is probably great to pick up, again the bridesmaids dresses or mother of the bride outfit. The service is helpful and the prices and reasonable.

John Lewis, I was shocked. The eveningwear section was tiny, and limited, at a push you could find a bridesmaids dress. The only way that you would be able to get a wedding dress would be to make your own from the fabrics in the haberdashery at John Lewis as suggested by one of their mannequins (SEE PICS). The only good part of John Lewis that helped for bridal wear was the hat section; there was a very wide selection, meaning that anyone at a wedding could apply a hat for their part at the wedding.

After analysing the competition, we then analysed again, (apart from the dresses we had received) how ceremony friendly the LFF boutique was. Ever since the shop had opened I did every week get at least one customer buy an outfit for an up and coming wedding. I had even before got a lady order her bridesmaid’s dresses in the bird print in Romeo Pieres dresses. So if you refer to the pictures, we used one of the wedding dresses from the Welsh collections (Julia Handy) and tried out bridesmaids, mother of the bride and a wedding outfit as spectators. For Bridemaid’s dresses we used ‘Emure’ and his pink satin numbers, which were quite sexy and summery for bridesmaids, and certainly unique. We then used the rose print in Romeo Pires in a skirt, top and a dress. These we felt were a good idea because you had the same theme, yet different shapes and outfits for the differ bridesmaid’s you may have. Mami London then provided a paisley summery dress for a nice wedding outfit, suitable for church then into the evening. Mother of the bride we used Marina Avraam’s new collection, which is very flattering bias cut skirt and tops available in blue, white and purple (good this season), along with Tit Fer Tat’s hat collection, which really made these picture look like a wedding. Good accessories were the ‘Natasia’ bags and the shawls by ‘Jada’. Again we found Romeo Pires to work well for a church outfit and Hommebody’s new collection to work well from day to evening, with the Tit Fer Tat hat, again in the hot new colour purple.

Generally, from this research I have found if perhaps we made a service for brides similar to that of ‘Berkertex’, we would have a good chance of being customer wedding friendly. Considering the range of outfits for wedding that we have potential for are demonstrated in quite a wide range above, for all different types of target market at the wedding. The dresses themselves are in close contact with the designer, and this is always a plus for the customer because the dress would be made to fit a specific personal measurement, therefore being perfect and original for the special day. I think the boutique itself offers originality and the dresses we received from Wales fit this bill, I can see them as a success within the store grasping the concept we need.

Nalini’s Diary-Oraganizing the big show……

This week has been soo exciting, I am loving organizing the fashion and seeing the progress we have made.

I’M SURE EVERYONE WILL HAVE GREAT TIME . THIS WILL ALSO BE A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PUBLIC TO MEET THE DESIGNER’S.

I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO BE THERE ON THAT DAY………………

“FASHION IS JUST NOT TO WEAR ANY THING , IT’S AN ART……..”

This week has been very hectic with the run up to Christmas.  It’s not just about human footfall traffic in Bluewater it’s also the traffic in and around. Bluewater is humming!

The LFF boutique is certainly reaping the benefits of all this customer traffic – we are now up to sales of roughly £2000 a day! Amazing, isn’t it! So as you can see the designers have certainly benefited from the whole experience including me and the crew on the shop floor.

New additions to the designer list now include ‘Michael Hall’s’ ponchos and scarves.  He had an amazing first day! Customers really have shown great interest ever since they were placed on the shop floor. Also to join us was Charlotte Keating and Julie Berubé which are genuinely lovely collections of lace and funky trends that are THE “must-haves” of the season. They are really reasonably priced, too, compared to other shops in Bluewater and the quality is excellent.

Tarbucktizard also came in last week, with some extremely beautiful camisoles, that should go down well for the party season – again we have had lots of interest by customers here too.

My team and I have been extremely busy taking deliveries, requests from customers etc and we continuously re-merchandise the stock so that we are fair and impartial. Stock rotation is key to a lively and new shop front every week!  We all did some extra curricular activities last week by reviewing the hot spots and trendy Christmas windows.

Ruth, our dynamic sales assistant, discovered that the favourite shop front was definitely ‘Laura Ashley’ which was festive yet stylish with its backdrop and white glistening beads and stars.  Other trendies that fit this season’s look are Miss Selfridge with a bohemian theme and Choice with a very glam exterior.

However, we did find the item of the season that should be avoided like the plague unless you wanted to look cheap and nasty this Christmas: Burberry.

We were disappointed with shop fronts such as Burberrys which looked completely wrong and outdated and Juicy Couture which was completely over done – their product is just tracksuits at the end of the day – the gym is where they should firmly stay!  Anyone who wears labels like these, we decided, must be label freaks with no sense of style!

Alice also discovered this week that the fab new ‘New Look’ store also doesn’t hold the best merchandise, despite its size! Leopard skin dress and shoes matching leopard print are also not the way to go unless Dorian Green is your idol!

Also exciting rumours I got wind of this week at Bluewater, Claire Tweedy from Girls Aloud pop group was spotted shopping in Bluewater not looking as hot as usual - just like a normal shopper.

Places that my team found valuable were high street stores such as Miss Selfridge and TopShop – they really are providing winning combinations of style and fashion. At the other end of the scale were Logo and Pilot created a false sense of security – the garments are cheap but poor quality so you know that they are just not going to last. Alternatively H&M looks strong with good value and well made clothes.  I used to think ‘Mango’ was a sophisticated high street store with a good fashionable product.  However my team and I found sizes were not particularly well done and were inconsistent and the quality varied from garment to garment, too.

One purchase by one of my girls was a beautiful peach sequined dress from Mango, lovely shape – plunge neck and cross over back, however quality was bad, after one night’s use sequins had started to disappear rapidly - very disappointing but still a nice collection in the new season.

A lot of Christmas shoppers have been commenting to me about ‘Next’ being another disappointment with mass produce and too plain collections. This has worked perfectly to our boutiques’ advantage as we offer exclusive designs at affordable prices.

With such encouraging response to the boutique from our customers it’s a big well done and hats off to the designers who are really getting noticed. The designers are right with their collections and the ensemble is a great mix together. Already we are getting regular customers that come back each week for another exciting peak into the LFF boutique.  It’s great for us and we hope it continues in high spirits for the rest of the Christmas and New Year period and long beyond into 2005!

Speak to you next week.

Nalini’s Diary X-mas, New Year continued and week 17th January

This week the shop has been dramatically changing because of course party season is now over, people’s bank balances are going to be waiting until mid month and new spring collections are staring to come in. We have been taking special attention to the surrounding shops in Bluewater, we noted shops that even started their sales early even before Christmas was over!. In general sale windows have not really impressed me, it is the usual laziness with naked mannequins and sale posters, no encouragement for the shoppers to rummage with ideas of what they could find. The best voted sale window we found was the ‘Reebok’ shop, which completely filled its window full of trainers, excellent idea and amazingly eye catching.

We have also been noting the products we have in store that are complying with the trends consumers are wanting this time in the season, for example ‘Tit fer Tat’ have stocked us with ‘Ollie and Nic’, which have been popular prints for bags this season, and just before Christmas, like ourselves ‘Ollie and Nic’ opened a store in the village in Bluewater- with stock selling out in their store, I’m expecting our bags to do the same.

Also gillets and the Kate Moss circle belts have been big ‘I wants’ over Christmas and New Year. We were lucky to have ‘Gushlow and Cole’ gillets, that were reversible and available in sheep sheering and rabbit skins, these sold very well as they were unique to others available in Bluewater. However, I am really hoping somebody provides me with some great funky, chunky belts, because we are defiantly lacking at the moment and missing out because these are in demand from everybody, please, please somebody get on the case!

We also noted all the Christmas activities and promotions going on in and around Bluewater, there were gift wrap stalls, a huge Santa’s grotto, whom Alice went to visit and sat on his knee! A large ice rink which was a beautiful area for family and friends, a sanctuary away from the Christmas rush!

After Christmas, chilling out having a great time, I arrived on Boxing Day expecting the rush to be over, but chill out was out of the question- again the car parks were full as before, there was traffic trying to get into Bluewater, the centre was cramped full of people wanting to spend, spend in the sales, and our shop was no exception. It was madness, and this continued for the rest of the week, sales were booming even better than that before Christmas, brilliant for all the designers and the shop, and we managed to establish some really good customers and had some great bargains to offer from everybody who went on promotion, the most popular sale item that week was from the ‘Tanya Dove’ collection, everyone wanted a dress or top at the bargain price.

As soon as New Years Day hit, the rush was over and people were all spend out and Bluewater was completely quiet, until the following weekend. However, we were busy changing the look of the shop, as the seasonal period was over, the shop needed to look funky and casual, so we fitted what the consumer needed for now, practical clothing, before spring season kicked in. As the weeks have progressed we have now had some of our new spring coming through, but only little pieces at a time, cannot wait for the shop to look different now and I think consumers are feeling the same! So far ‘Actar Actar’ have given me some great bright tops in orange and pastels- big this coming season; ‘Micheal Hall’ has brought some great crochet alpaca wool shawls and ponochos, to tie into the bohemian look that people are going crazy for next season. ‘Romeo Pieres’ have also given us new stock, which is already flying and being requested for left, right and centre! All the stock however is still being commented on its original and unique style and as January is progressing, the customers are coming in more often and loving the service and stock.

My life was about to have a major make over! I was making the move from my university town, to move back home and start as a Manager in a brand new exciting company – The LFF Bluewater boutique.

When I went for the interview I had no idea of the huge opportunity that was waiting for me at the London Fashion Forum. What started off as just a job hunting day almost two weeks ago at the Bluewater learning shop ended up being a whole new career path for me.

When I saw the job description for the LFF it sounded perfect for my line of experience and work. So I put my name forward and sure enough the next day there was a telephone call from the lovely Tracy Robinson.

I conducted some market research about LFF on both www.fashioncapital.co.uk and www.lffonline.com and on the day of my interview I was strangely nervous and with great anticipation I went into the shop.  I had been up all the night before with my boyfriend raving about the company and how nervous I was going to be.  Despite how intimidating it felt, I knew I had to show I felt competent to take on the major challenge of what lay ahead.

I arrived very early at Bluewater on the day of my interview as I had no idea where the unit was situated.  Fortunately it is brilliantly situated opposite the Cinema entrance on the top floor next to a very busy Kite shop. I nervously knocked on the door and waited.

When I first entered the unfinished shop I meet with Tracy who explained the current situation and I could easily assess that a lot of work needed to happen before the doors finally opened. Straight away I loved the whole concept of the company and I was very enthusiastic.   However, the shop still needed a lot of work and with hardly any stock it looked very bear.  But the space was amazing and pristine with wonderful white marble ands, and white with loads of space for customer movement.  I was impressed by the very spacious too. It seemed an ideal outfit.

I first meet Jenny who was buzzing with ideas and tasks that needed to be put into order.  She told me about this diary entry that I would need to complete and I thought maybe this would be quite useful for the designers, consumers and company to grasp exactly how myself and my team are going to be working together for the benefit of the designers.

After my interview I could not wait to get contact my boyfriend on my mobile to explain that the job was just perfect working for a unique company and the excitement of being part of a new project.  He was thrilled for me and now I had to wait patiently for that all important call from the LFF to see if I had managed to get the job.

I phoned Tracy the following day and I literally jumped for joy when she said she wanted me to be part of the team.  The following Tuesday was the big day and the deadline for opening was Thursday for the opening launch.  There were so many activities to be done in order to open in time at times I seriously worried how we were going to get all the jobs done.  WE had to merchandise the unit with the right stock, finish the shop fit, literally buy the equipment, paint, buy the tills, finish off the changing room ………the list went on and on and on!  I was thrown in the deep end and I loved it – I was totally busy the whole time and the time just flew.

I met some of the designers who explained their products to me. I met two guys from ‘Natasia’ who were very nice and have THE ‘must have’ bags of the season.  Tuesday and Wednesday flew by in a haze and miraculously the shop opened for the launch on time Thursday pm.
