Adam and Mee aim for best business

London Excellence, the primary source of support and information on business excellence in the capital, are looking for entrepreneurs from creative industries who are interested in improving their business acumen and organisational awareness.

Adam and Mee, based in Islington, North London, have been designing and making contemporary clutch bags for 18 months, and whilst it is still in it’s embryonic stages, the business is already expanding and moving into overseas markets, in partnership with Barney’s New York in Japan.  For co-founder Adam Singh, the acquisition of business skills and knowledge is intrinsic to future success, so when he enrolled on London Excellence’s “best” programme he knew what he wanted:

“Designer’s rarely fail because of the quality of their work. Usually, it is a lack of commercial understanding. I hoped that the programme would help me look at how we were operating as a business, and possibly make improvements so we could devote more time and resources to creativity and designing”

Underpinned by the notion of practical, rather than theory-reliant learning, ‘best’ is aimed at developing the leadership skills of owners or managers of medium-large organisations.  It encourages holistic management, focusing on factors such as policy, strategy, resources, partnerships and people and their impact on achieving key performance results for the business.

Singh feels that the course provided a valuable insight into how he wants to take Adam and Mee further. “As we become more established, the skills I acquired will become even more relevant. There were workshops on elements of business practice that I had not considered before, such as how to properly and systematically structure our core processes, so that more energy could be expended on actual design rather than things that be time-wasting or irrelevant.

Providing a series of programmes, (best, beta™, Investors in Excellence) aimed at attaining the highest standards in all spheres of life in the capital, London Excellence help entrepreneurs to reaffirm and then reach their goals. London Excellence is the not-for-profit regional partner of the UK Excellence Federation, and is the primary source of information and support on the use of the EFQM Excellence Model in London.

Programmes offered by London Excellence:

Investors in Excellence is a verified quality standard based on the nine criteria of the excellence model. Launched in London in 2004, the award helps organisations sustain continual improvement of standards by implementing rigorously high standards in areas such as leadership, people, partnerships and resources, customer results, and key performance results.

best improves leadership skills and business performance via an 8 week programme. With participants drawn from a variety of sectors, the concept of best practice is applied practically to an organisation’s processes, and well formed outcomes are developed, to maximise key performance results. Subsidies are currently available for SME’s.

beta™, run as two workshops, uses a London Excellence facilitator to carry out a comprehensive diagnosis of an organisation, using the Excellence Model as a framework. The aim is to identify areas which require action, and to develop practical and achievable plans to carry out and implement the necessary improvements.
