Window Window on the mall, who's the best dressed of them all?

I like to pretend that window shopping is a guiltless pleasure. I tell myself that it allows me to indulge in shopping without actually spending a cent. 

However, inevitably a store window stops me in my tracks.  My jaw hits the floor, my eyes bulge out of my head, my hands and feet start towards the door as though they are independent from my body. 

Even if I am able to resist opening my pocket book, the store has had a victory. They have gotten me inside.  Now, I am one step closer to making that purchase because I am familiarizing myself with what that shop has to offer.

While strolling through London, window shopping as usual, I tried to notice which windows caught my eye.  I realized that I was being unwittingly drawn to stores whose window displays gave subtle, underlying connotations that associated their products to my fantasies.  Let’s look at La Bette Femme, a shop in Kingly Court off Carnaby Street.

The window is surprisingly simply.  It is uncluttered, yet it is laced with details to draw customers’ attention.  The blue chiffon and slippers send a message to any passer-buyer: wear this and walk on Cloud 9.

La Bette Femme’s other window displays are just as enticing, which is perhaps because the windows share continuity.

The red feather draws from the blue taffeta, so both windows imply floating through the air.  Also, the floral theme in this window gives viewers another subconscious hook.  The flower pattern in the material is smartly paired with pink roses and a white pillow.  Hence, I walk by and think of lying in a bed of roses, which associates the garment with the ultimate in romantic fantasy. 

La Bette Femme’s symbolic window designs make them a model for any store.
