This article is intended for all Boutique subscribers who have not fully understood the terms and conditions of PayPal. Please do read through the following article carefully.

1) CHARGE BACKS You need to know about chargebacks. In the words of PayPal:
"A chargeback is a credit card charge that has been rejected by the credit card holder, typically in cases where the credit card was stolen and used fraudulently.
If you accept credit cards, in person or through PayPal, it is possible that you might encounter a chargeback from a buyer - just as a seller accepting personal cheques might receive an occasional bad cheque. Chargebacks are an unfortunate but realistic cost of doing business, and most sellers factor this cost into their business plans."

THIS MEANS THAT YOU MAY GET AN ORDER AND SEND THE GOODS ONLY TO FIND THAT THERE IS A CHARGEBACK AND THE PAYMENT IS WITHDRAWN. THIS APPLIES PRETTY MUCH HOWEVER YOU TRADE ON-LINE. YOU NEED TO MAKE PROVISION FOR THIS E.G. BY SETTING YOUR PRICES ACCORDINGLY.
CHARGEBACKS WILL BE A MINIMUM OF 60 DAYS AFTER THE TRANSACTIONS, E.G. AFTER SOMEONE HAS NOTICED FROM THEIR CREDIT CARD STATEMENT THAT IT IS STOLEN AND HAS THEN REPORTED IT. IN VIEW OF THIS AMOUNT OF TIME YOU CANNOT PRACTICALLY WITHOLD FROM SHIPPING THE GOODS FOR A SAFE PERIOD. CHARGEBACKS TYPICALLY TAKE LONGER THAN 60 DAYS
You might also get told something like "PayPal is a secure trading system hence people would be less likely to try to make payment with a stolen card as they would be more likley to get caught than if they used it in an on-line store".
DISREGARD SUCH STATEMENTS, IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU, BE ON YOUR GUARD. FOR INSTANCE LOOK OUT FOR ANOMALIES IN THE PAYMENT INFORMATION.
PayPal offer some tips concerning fraud prevention, especially for high risk/high value items.

THERE IS A PAYPAL CHARGEBACK PROTECTION POLICY. TO QUALIFY FOR THIS YOU MUST HAVE A VERIFIED BUSINESS ACCOUNT (HAVE REGISTERED A CREDIT CARD AGAINST YOUR ACCOUNT AND COMPLETED 'EXPANDED USAGE' APPLICATION)

2) ACCEPT/REJECT PAYMENT
When you get the email from PayPal saying that you have received an order. We previously mentioned that you will need to Accept/Reject it.
THIS MAY OR MAY NOT HAPPEN. ACCORDING TO PAYPAL SOME PAYMENTS ARE AUTOMATICALLY ACCEPTED AND ONLY A FEW REQUIRE THAT THIS IS DONE MANUALLY.
3) YOUR PRICING.
Your prices should be inclusive of VAT and delivery. To do otherwise would amount to a surcharge and you would not then be eligible for the PayPal protection.
IF YOU DO NOT WISH YOUR PRICES TO INCLUDE WORLDWIDE SHIPMENT YOU SAY SOMETHING IN YOUR DELIVERY NOTES PAGE LIKE
"At present we only ship to the UK all prices are inclusive of UK VAT."
IF YOU WERE TO GET AN OVERSEAS ORDER THEN YOU WOULD HAVE TO REFUND IT AND SEND AN EXPLANATORY EMAIL.
