In response to the comments about racism, I feel very saddened by this discussion. Fashion should be about all people, races and cultures. The whole fashion process is _base_d on influences from around the world, from all walks of life. Race should not become the central issue, as fashion is for everyone. Most of the fashion collections on our catwalks have taken inspiration from different cultures and countries - is the 'out of Africa' safari trend racist? No - it is embracing our love of different cultures. The sad part is that we have to label everything in this way - fashion is for people of any culture or race who share a passion for _style_.

Are you a Black talented designer? Is this right? Under enployement law and equal opportunities, employers and interviewers are not allowed to discriminate and create prejudices. Interviewers are only allowed to ask questions that can be related to every applicant, for example you cannot just ask a woman if she is planning to become pregnant, because you cannot ask a man this question. The same applies to race, sex, age, etc.

Hi there. I am responding to your ad dated 31/3/05. I am deeply offended by the nature of the ad. If the ad had said 'talented white designers wanted', there would be accusations of racism and discrimination, but as it it the other way round, it is ok!, and is still racism and discrimination. It should not matter what the ethnic origin of the designer is and this kind of attitude does not help racial equality in this country, only segregates minorities more.

well excuse me raven this is not racist, and you shouldnt be offended. i am a young black designer and at the end of the day you should look at this as a postive thing for the black community as whole.it is encouraging all talent within its community to come forward. you are trying to turn this into something which its not!!!
im sure nadine didnt attempt to offend anybody, and coming from the community i feel sometimes it can be harder to get the attention your work deserves and postivity from society. often the press creates too much negatity and sterotyping about the black culture And here we have an POSTIVE indivdual that is trying to create postitvity and help raw talent get the exposure it deserves within the indutry and encourage black designers with their talent. its not racist.ITS CREATING and ENCOURAGING OPPOTUNTY !!! sorry i have to disagree with you

i totally agree with hte comment posted i to feel that that was a total racist advertisment and does not help at all with the intergration of the fashion community. as these two replies obviously show. and your comment that it is difficult to get your work recognised is probally due to your obvious out dated black (or should i say colored) never sure. white conflict people have moved on and i think that you should do the same. what happens if they are black with oriental origins are they not going to be accepted!!!!!!!
take the advice and as i said move on and incorporate all in your ideas. and maybe that way there will be less emphasis on the color of skin and we can concentrate on the color of someonmes imagination.

thanks

Dear All,

Can I just point out to the last person to reply to the original message, that Black people do not like being called 'coloured'. Whereas I accept your point about the original message (talent is talent regardless of colour or ethnic origin and messages such as the one originally posted do not help to create harmony amongst differing people), I find it extrmely ignorant and upsetting that you would use such a term of reference.

Regards,

Lisa.

I am not surprised with the offence felt by people as I sure was offended, and I am Asian! I think this was more a case of being naive and not thinking before writing up the advert. Imagine if this kind of advert was featured in the newspapers and Drapers??
I am a talented and an award-winning designer but have never felt that skin colour is an issue in any way to my failures and successes.

I can't believe that a show can't just be a show for talented people? Why cut off applicants because they're white? This seems utterly ridiculous and if they the situation were reversed I doubt anyone would be allowed to post an advert for an all white show? The show wasn't aimed at culture, it was aimed at race. White people have culture too but would never be allowed to celebrate it in an all white show and I wouldn't want them too. The bigger the mix the greater the diversity. Talent should stand for itself regardless of ethnicicity. To celebrate black culture is obviously a great thing but can't everyone celebrate their origins together rather than excluding other talent which surrounds us because they don't have the right skin colour to apply?????????

Re:ARE YOU A BLACK TALENTED DESIGNER 2 Years, 7 Months ago
I am a non-religious Jew. It is a little known and often conveniently ignored fact that Jewish people are classed as Black and Minority ethnic. So under the various Race Relations/Humans Rights Acts I would be en_title_d to apply to participate in this event and kick up a stink if denied equal opportunity to take part.

I find any kind of discrimination, be it negative, positive or otherwise, deeply offensive. It is this kind of segregation (however well intended) that leads to gettoisation, isolation and, looking back in history, concentration camps and mass-murder - over 6 million during WW2 not counting those rounded up and murdered for being disabled or gay.

Racism and anti-Semitism are unfortunately on the increase across much of Europe and so community cohesion and not separation should be the way forward to promote mutual respect, understanding and better cohesion of the entire population, particularly where public money is involved.

The Race Relations and as amended recognises the need to promote good relations between people of different ethnicities and cultures. I don’t see how this initiative encompasses the spirit of the Race Relations Act and as amended.
