Re:Manufacturing costs 4 Months ago
I've never studied this: does anyone know any rules-of-thumb that a producer will use in costing?
For example the length of seams and the number of operations?
Not an urgent question for me just now but an interesting one for the future.

Hi, MissFortune

Did you have any luck with this manufacturer? Did you go into production with them? Would be great to know what they were like as the prices they quote are quite good.

Re:Manufacturing costs 1 Year, 4 Months ago
Hi as you have a lot of points here its easier for me to answer the questions as you ask them.Replies in Capitals for ease of reading

"However I did find one - but when I asked how much the production would
cost for certain types of items (I gave examples such as, basic t-shirt
_style_ jersey top, fitted jacket), I was absolutely shocked.
I was quoted higher prices for the production of those items (£30 and £70 respectively) than the prices I would
actually be intending to sell them at." THE PROBLEM WITH ONE OFF SAMPLES IS TIME. SOME UNITS WORK ON AN HOURLY RATE OF APPROXIMATELY £15 PER HOUR HENCE HERE IT LOOKS AS THOUGH YOU HAVE BEEN CHARGED TWO HOURS OF TIME. UNFORTUNATLEY FOR ONE OFF SAMPLES OR SEALERS THIS IS COMMON PLACE AND EXPLAISN WHY S0 MANY DESIGNERS BUY IN T-SHIRTS AND THEN BASTARDISE THEM.

Here is the list of the other items I described and the price for
manufacturing a single item that was quoted to me:

* Shirt or blouse with some detailing (gathering, pintucks etc) £45
* Below knee skirt with some detailing (gores, godets etc)£50
* Trousers (with waistband etc - jeans _style_) £60
* Fitted coat with panels and pockets £90
ACTUALLY THESE PRICES FOR SOME CMTS THAT WE ARE WORKING WITH ARE PRETTY STANDARD - HAVE TO SAY THAT THE JACKET PRICE PRO RATA IS QUITE CHEAP!
I made clear that I was only requiring the actual sewing up of garments THIS IS NOW CALLED M T UNIT RATHER THAN CMT AND THE PRICES SHOULD BE CHEAPER.
- I am trained in pattern cutting and draping and would be sourcing my
own fabrics so the additional cost that this could add in didn't factor
in the calculations. YOU HAVE TO PUT IN A TIME COSTS FOR YOURSELF OTHERWISE YOU ARE NOT CONCLUDING YOUR COSTINGS PROPERLY - IT BECOMES A LABOUR OF LOVE AND THAT'S NOT WHAT BUSINESS IS ALL ABOUT.

My question is - are these prices reasonable? Is this the best offer I
can expect? NO THERE ARE CHEAPER UNITS AND HERE'S SOME THAT WE WORK WITH.
CCS LTD - NAZ 020 8411 8185
GLORIA FASHIONS - DAVID KING 020 8509 1009
ALLIGEN - FATMAH HAVEN'T GOT THIS NUMBER ON ME BUT CALL VANESSA ON 020 8462 9620 FOR THE RIGHT NUMBER.
PARK LANE _style_S - THOMAS 020 8800 6668
GOOD LUCK HERE.

If you are (or if you know of) manufacturers out there, UK-_base_D, who
can go much cheaper, please let me know.
WE ALSO WORK WITH A DESIGNER CATARINA WHO IS SETTING UP HER OWN FACTORY GIVE HER A CALL TOO. 07766863780
Also, should I be trying my local dressmakers, people who usually do
alterations etc? Or only larger manufacturing companies? Where would I
be likely to get a better deal?OU SHOULD DEFINATLEY TRY YOUR LOCAL DRESS MAKER TOO BUT JUST REMEMBER THAT YOU NEED A UNIFORMITY IN QUALITY SO YOU NEED YOUR SEALERS AND COMMENTS DISCUSSED IN A PRE-PRODCUTION MEETING. WE KNOW A WIDE CROSS SECTION OF DESGINERS WHO USE LOCAL DRESS MAKERS PLUS THEIR OWN PRODUCTION TOO.
BEST OF LUCK - KEEP IN TOUCH AND TELL US HOW YOU GET ON. WOULD BE USEFUL TO SEE PICTURES TOO AS ITS HARD TO REVIEW PRICES WITHOUT SEEING WORK CONTENT E.G. DID YOUR T-SHIRTS HAVE DOUBLE TURNED HEMS, INTRICATE SEAMING...MANY TIMES WHEN WE WANTED TO SUPPLY A GARMENT TO A RETAILER FOR A CERTAIN PRICE POINT WE TOOK WORK OFF TO BRING THE PRICE DOWN E.G. USING A VISIBLE ZIP INSTEAD OF AN INVISIBLE ONE, BAGGED ON CUFFS RATHER THAN DOUBLE CUFFS, OVERLOCK HEM RATHER THAN DOUBLE TURNED HEM ETC. IS THIS AN OPTION?

YOU SHOULD CONSIDER COMING IN FOR A MENTORING SESSION - IF YOU ARE INTERESTED PLEASE SPEAK TO VANESSA ABOUT THIS AS PART OF FASHION ENTER OUR SPECIALIST SISTER COMPANY.
REGARDS
JENNY
Many thanks,
Claire Morrow

Re:Manufacturing costs 1 Year, 4 Months ago
I'm in a similar situation myself, can't really offer any amazing advice but I got a costing from a company in Nottingham for a few of my garments to be manufactured, the prices were higher than i can afford, as I am trying to sell wholesale, but lower than those i would say. I was asking to have 10 per colour, per size and this is what they came back with;

Simple jersey top - £10 sample, £7 for 10 and over.
Fairly simple dress - £15 sample, £8.50 for 10 and over.
Blouse with details like buckles sewn on shoulders, panels & piping - £37.50 sample, £16 for 10 and over

They are _base_d in Nottingham. Phoenix Clothing 01159 599944 phoenixclothing@hotmail.com ask for Chris or Hilary

Can't say what they would be like to use as I only got as far as getting some samples done but they were always friendly and helpful

Hope that helps
